October Blogfest: Zombies, part 1

Around here, zombies are my bread and buttah. It would be wrong not to talk about them at Halloween. Last week was supposed to be dedicated entirely to all things zombie, but given my computer issues I wasn’t able to make that happen. Instead I’m going to cram more in to a few days and see where that gets us.

So. Zombies.

I love zombies. I love how wonderfully metaphorical they can be, but what I love even more is that if you get away from the whole zombie as communist, zombie as consumerist, zombie as tv/internet drone, zombie as cube worker metaphors, you can still be just as in love with zombie the really scary monster. Most people poo-poo either fast zombie or slow zombie, voodoo zombie or virus zombie, whatever whatever whatever I say. I say more zombies for everyone, pick your zombie candy preference and be happy. The more zombies the merrier.

Sears Marketing Goes Undead

Sears has played their hand at some creative Halloween marketing by opening up a section of their store dedicated to zombies. As in, zombie shoppers. (Hah! Holy Metaphor Batman!) They’ve even altered their tag lines to say “Come see the zombie side of Sears” and my favorite “Afterlife. Well spent.” I don’t know how long this section of their website will be up and running, but I beg you to go check it out. You can find the perfect give for that special zombie in your life, as well as watch commercials (though arguably low budget, the make up is pretty fantastic) for products aimed at the fashionable zombie. See one of those ads below. The whole thing is a little silly but I say Good On You, Sears. Marketing departments need to show a little courage sometimes.

One Dead Sexy Zombie Calendar

Nothing says “Zombie” like librarians. Errr, or at least, nothing says zombie like THESE librarians. This awesome Zombies in the Library calendar is so cool that as soon as I heard about it I ordered one. The pictures are great and I can’t wait for it to hang in my office (even though I haven’t actually been spending that much time in my office because it is currently overrun with books and no more bookshelf space.) These calendars are $25.08 and they were like $5 shipping for me.

Witnesses to a Car Crash Believe Zombie Apocalypse Has Begun

This news is old, but back in July a car crashed on the interstate outside Portland and much to the horror of witnesses and emergency crew, the people who piled out of the crashed car were zombies.

Not real zombies, exactly, but people dressed as zombies heading to a costume party. At first emergency crew thought the injuries were far worse than they really were when they couldn’t tell the fake injuries and real injuries apart due to the costumes. Also, the witnesses were too busy wetting themselves as this was a clear sign the apocalypse was most assuredly nigh.

(Kinda) Zombie Short Story by Kelly Link – It’s Free!

The talented Ms. Kelly Link, famed for her book Pretty Monsters, has an excellent short story on her website called Some Zombie Contingency Plans that is not really about zombies but kinda and I highly recommend it.

Zombie Comic to Die For

I’ve posted about it before, but The Zombie Hunters always deserves another shout out. I love this comic more than any other!!!

The Thorax is a Lie

They’re Coming to Get You Barbara is a not often updated (as in, like, not since 2008) website that I would normally skip telling you about since it is sort of dead in the water, except for the fact it has several of the most amazing, grossest zombie cakes in the history of zombie cakes. I mean, I love zombies, but I have a hard time wanting to eat a zombie cake. In any case, a couple of years ago a friend of mine and I tried to make the Thorax cake for her birthday and it was a pretty incredible failure. The whole thing fell apart, but it tasted pretty kick ass.

ZOMG ZOMBIE BOOK CONTEST!

St. Martin’s Press is having a pretty killer contest (HA! See what I did right there?) for the release of Handling the Undead by John Ajvide Lindqvist, otherwise known as the master behind the scaryscary book Let the Right One In, otherwise known as One of the Coolest Vampire Movies Ever. Now he’s tackling zombies and I’m kind of ok with that. 5 winners will receive a hardback of Handling the Undead and a movie poster for Let the Right One In. I am not affiliated with this contest at all, I just happened to stumble across it when checking out the Tor.com website. I’ve signed up for the contest but that’s about as much as I’m involved in it :-)

Short French Zombie Film.
(Hint: Not at all like a Short French Kiss.)

Mosure (Bitten) is a short french flick on YouTube about zombies. It is cool and creepy and for being only 13 minutes long it sure FEELS like a full movie. Awesome!
